Aims

To provide the underpinning knowledge to enable Fire Safety duties in the
workplace to be undertaken more effectively. It is relevant for managers, supervisors and employee representatives and other duty holders with responsibility for fire safety and fire risk assessment in the workplace. This comprehensive course gives an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of Fire Safety Management and is a valuable addition to the General Certificate.

Structure

The course is offered on a day-release basis or by distance/blended learning, which involves self directed home study with tutor support which includes feedback on assessments, tutor monitors performance and provides support via telephone or email.

Revision, mock examination, practical assessment and examinations are all carried out at the College. Support is available in assessment, study and examination techniques.

The examinations are held 4 times per year in March, June, September and December. The exams comprise of two 2-hour written papers and a practical assessment that involves carrying out a fire risk assessment and the preparation of a management report.

Distance/Blended Learners will have to attend an induction which last 3 hours. Learning materials are issued on induction day. Distance/Blended learners can attend some day release classes by agreement with the course tutor.

Content

The qualification comprises of three separately assessed units: Management of Health & Safety (NGC1), Fire Hazard and Control (FC1), Fire Safety Practical Application (FC2). The topics covered are: Managing Fire Safety, Principles of Fire and Explosion, Causes and Prevention of Fire, Fire Protection in Buildings, Safety of People in the Event of Fire, Fire Risk Assessment

For those seeking a promoted post or a career in fire safety this qualification is widely regarded as the starting point.

Progression

The Fire Safety and Risk Management Certificate can provide a base level qualification for those with responsibilities in fire safety. Candidates may wish to widen their knowledge of Health and Safety by completing a NEBOSH General Certificate that may lead to progression to Diploma or VQ4 level working towards chartered membership of IOSH.

Entry Requirements

The published dates and price for this course assume that the candidate has completed NGC1 in the last 5 years. If this is not the case please contact us to arrange for this to be studied separately.

There are no barriers to entry although candidates are required to write a short report, requiring a degree of written and communication skills.
Additionally candidates that have not been involved in study for some time may need training and practice in study and examination techniques. Support in this area will be available through the College.
