National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH)
Aims
To provide the underpinning knowledge to enable Health and Safety duties in the workplace to be undertaken more effectively. It is relevant for managers, supervisors and employee representatives with health and safety responsibilities. This comprehensive course, gives an excellent grounding in the fundamentals of occupational Safety and Health Management.
Structure
The course is offered on a day-release basis, block release or by open learning, which involves self directed home study with tutor support. Revision, mock examination, practical assessment and examinations are all carried out at the College. Support is available in assessment, study and examination techniques.
The qualification comprises of three separately assessed units: Management of Health & Safety (NGC1) Controlling Workplace Hazards (NGC2) Health & Safety Practical Application (NGC3). The examinations are held 4 times per year in March, June, September and December. The exams comprise of two 2-hour written papers and a practical assessment that involves carrying out an inspection of a workplace and the preparation of a management report.

The following topics are covered: Health and Safety Foundations, Policy, Organisation, Promoting a Positive Health and Safety Culture, Risk Assessment, Principles of Control, Incident Investigation, Recording and Reporting, Monitoring/Review/Audit, Movement of People and Vehicles, Manual and Mechanical Handling, Work Equipment, Electricity, Fire, Chemical and Biological Hazards, Physical and Psychological Hazards and Construction Activities.

Progression
The General Certificate can provide a base level qualification for those with specific responsibilities in health and safety, progression could be made through Diploma or VQ level 4 working towards chartered membership of IOSH.
Entry Requirements
This course is designed for those with Health and Safety responsibilities in the workplace; therefore individuals should be employed in a role related to Health and Safety.
Although no formal qualifications are required candidates would be advantaged by having some experience of the workplace.
