Counterbalance Forklift Truck Operators (Novice) (RTITB)
Aims
This course aims to provide novice truck operators with the practical skills to operate a Counterbalanced Operated Forklift Truck.
On completing the course participants will be able to:
- Operate a forklift truck safely
- Give due care and attention to the load being handled
- Give due care to personnel and equipment in the vicinity.
Structure
The course is approved by the Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB). Training is undertaken within an excellent simulated working environment. The course length is 30 hours delivered over four or five days as required. There are both written and practical tests to conclude the course.

- Health and Safety
- Controls and Instruments
- Basic Manoeuvres
- Lift Truck Stability
- Hydraulic System and Controls
- Load Weight Assessment
- Vehicle Loading and Unloading
- Working in Racking.
Career Opportunities
Opportunities exist in the Retail and Distribution Industry for successful students to gain employment as forklift drivers.
Progression
Once this course is completed students may undertake further training in driving various other types of plant equipment.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry qualifications for this course, although a medical check-up is sometimes required.
